Student Learning Outcomes

The teachers of Concord and Concord-Carlisle Regional High School have taken on the very large task of developing "Student Learning Outcomes" for classes we teach. This has been a three-year effort to define what Student Learning Outcomes are, to determine what they should look like, then to write them and come to agreement on them. What you will find below is those outcomes.

What are Student Learning Outcomes?
Student Learning Outcomes are the critical knowledge that we will expect the majority of students to have once they have completed a class. The word “critical” signifies that all teachers who teach the class will teach this material in all classes of that name. “Knowledge” is not restricted to facts and figures; it also includes concepts and process. So you can expect that if your child is in third grade science at Thoreau, s/he will be exposed to this knowledge, as will be students in the third grade classes at Alcott and Willard, although it is probably that different teachers will teach it in slightly different ways. Likewise, all students taking Algebra I will be exposed to the knowledge specified in the Student Learning Outcomes. In addition, your child will be taught other things depending upon the interest level of the students, the expertise of the teacher in a particular area, or a project that the class decides to pursue.

Who decided the appropriateness of the Student Learning Outcomes?
The outcomes were written by teachers and are a refection of Concord’s and Carlisle’s community standards, teachers’ input, educational research, and State and Federal frameworks.

Will the Student Learning Outcomes always stay the same?
The Student Learning Outcomes will continue to be revised whenever we make a curriculum change that influences the outcome as written. This may be done as part of summer curriculum development, or throughout the year as we continue to evaluate and reevaluate what we teach and what we expect students to learn.

Are the Student Learning Outcomes complete?
The Student Learning Outcomes that are posted are not complete. Although we have written them for most social studies classes, we have decided not to post them here until the Massachusetts Department of Education determines what its own frameworks will look like. Once the final version of their frameworks is done, we may want to adjust ours somewhat. We have decided to withhold doing that until we get word that the Department of Education has completed its work. We also have a few more 11th and 12th grade classes to complete. We will post those as soon as we complete them.

I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to every teacher in the two districts. Every teacher had a hand in developing these Student Learning Outcomes.

I invite you to read through the outcomes and acquaint yourself with them. If you have any questions about them, please contact your child's teacher, Principal, or the Assistant Superintendent.
